Hey there! I am Kirsten and welcome to Survival Betty where I show you practical self-reliance, homesteading and preparedness tips from my 50 acre homestead in Oregon's Willamette Valley.

My parents, grandparents, and great-grandfather have all called this land home and now I am raising my 5 year old twins here.  How did I end up in the preparedness homesteading world?

Well oddly enough, in 1999 I had turned my martial arts passion and 3 black belts into starting my own Krav Maga training center,  During this time I began to volunteer at a local police department and enjoyed it immensely.  This would lead me to a wonderful career as a fully sworn police officer for many years.  Yeah, but what's that to do with emergency preparedness?  During my career I had attending some training on the Cascadia Subduction Zone event.  Realizing this massive earthquake was an eventuality and not a possibility, I began creating a homestead with preparedness in mind, starting only with a shovel, and a Facebook page.

As I began digging (pun intended) into emergency preparedness I realized that the more you live a self-reliant life, the easier emergency preparedness becomes.  I had been living a moderately self-reliant life using the skills passed down to me like gardening, preserving food, raising animals, herbalism, and more.  These were just normal ways of living that I had grown up with and still used into adulthood.  They weren't an "old fashion" way of life like city folk think.  These skills were just normal and everyday life, and remain so for many folks today.  What I noticed on my facebook page was that they weren't a part of a large amount of people's lives anymore, but they wanted to learn.

My basic, no-nonsense approach to homesteading and preparedness appeals to many folks.  I am a straight talker with a knack for teaching and I am glad that I have a way to take all the skills I have accumulated over my lifetime and share them with folks.  Folks interested in being more prepared and more self-reliant. Folks wanting to weather a financial disaster or natural disaster.  Folks wanting to live a life closer to the land.  Whether you're in an urban environment, a suburban lot, or you have access to several acres- you'll find something helpful here to help you realize your goals.  Just remember this is a lifestyle.  Preparedness is indeed a journey of learning skills, changing your mindset, adapting to resources and the environment and putting your newly relearned skills to use.

Stay safe and keep on prepping!
